We’re especially excited about all of the new members we’ve welcomed to the club, many of whom have just had a baby or moved to the area. Ambitious moms have been showing up to 2012 playgroups with babies as young as a few weeks old. Keep it up ladies! (No matter how old your child is, sign up for your specific playgroup on Big Tent so you can get updates on play dates and other happenings.) Also, be sure to say hello to a new face at your next Parents Club event.
More than 40 moms showed up for drinks and a tasty spread of appetizers at our July Mom’s Night Out at Nirvana Grille. It was a rainy night, but we ended up enjoying the warm and cozy ambience of the restaurant’s indoor dining area. (Read on for information about our next MNO in September.)
The 2009 and 2010 playgroup kids went nuts at the Fire Station Outing in downtown Laguna. The firefighters put on their gear, gave the kids a tour of the station and let them sit in the truck and “drive.” The firemen even turned on the lights and sirens when they had to rush out for a real fire emergency at the end of the afternoon.
We finished the month strong with the Finger Painting Bonanza at Alta Laguna Park. Some of the kids were a little hesitant to get messy at first, but were soon up to their wrists and ankles in paint making large scale masterpieces, as well as framable hand and foot prints.
Thank you to everyone who showed up for Fun at the Field this past Saturday to raise money for the McMurray family. The Parents Club hosted a bubble booth at the event that was put on by the Laguna Beach Little League and kids of Laguna Beach. It was inspiring and touching to see so many members of the community show up to support William and his family.

Coming up next is our annual BBQ this Friday, August 10 at Bluebird Park from 4:30 to 7:30. It will be a traditional family-style get-together with ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, beer and wine, and live music (and more than 100 of your friends). We’ll be providing the main meat, a veggie option and a keg; please bring a side dish or dessert to share and wine, if beer isn’t your drink of choice. Make sure to RSVP on Big Tent so that we don’t run out of beer or food.
For this event, we are supporting the Child Abuse Prevention Center (brightfutures4kids.org) and will be collecting any size diapers and lightly used linens, including sheets, blankets and pillows. Any of these items would be greatly appreciated.
If you’ve been interested in becoming CPR certified or re-certified, mark your calendars for Saturday, August 18 from 1:00 to 6:00. The CPR and first aid training will take place at the Boys and Girls Club at 1085 Laguna Canyon Road and will cover infant, child and adult CPR, use of AED defibrillators, and how to respond to bleeding, heart attack, broken bones, allergic reactions and more. Cost is $55 per person and payment can be made in cash or check at the training. You never know when you’ll need to handle an emergency situation.
For those of you looking for a way to simplify dinner time, check out the Meal Prep Class at the Laguna Culinary Arts (845 Laguna Canyon Road). The group will be meeting on Tuesday, August 14 from 7:00 to 9:00 to prepare meals to take home while enjoying a glass of wine. You can make five four-serving meals for $150 or ten four-serving meals for $250. Dishes include salmon Provencal, cuban chicken and BBQ pork chops. E-mail Chef Evan at evan@evanssupperclub.com to reserve a spot. You can find the Supper Club menu online at EvansSupperClub.com.
Next month, on Wednesday, September 19, we’ll be hosting a favorite MNO: a Duffy boat ride in Newport Harbor. What better way to cap off the summer than by enjoying an evening of wine and food with girlfriends on a boat? The moms will meet at the high school and share cabs to Newport Beach. You must RSVP on Big Tent to attend, so reserve your spot now.
After a brief summer hiatus, the Book Club is back on September 5 from 7:30 to 9:30. We’ll be discussing The Rock of Tanios by Amin Maalouf. This is great motivation to carve out some reading time in your schedule (aside from Boynton books). Then come and discuss what you loved or hated about the book over refreshments.
Just a reminder that the Parents Club is run by volunteers. (No, we don't get paid for all of the glamorous work we do.) If you are interested in helping, click on the volunteer tab at the top of the blog. We are always appreciative of any time you can give to keeping the club running.
If you’re looking for an easy way to volunteer, we deliver meals to the families of new babies through our Families Helping Families program. Just contact Kami Marshall at kamibmarshall@gmail.com. This doesn’t have to be an ongoing commitment; if you pick up and deliver one meal, it would be a huge help. The families are always so appreciative and you get to spend a few minutes with an adorable newborn. Also send Kami an e-mail if you're pregnant or have just had a baby and would like to receive a delicious meal from a local restaurants, compliments of the Parents Club.
Happy August!
