October Newsletter

First, thank you for taking time from costume ordering or making, homework checking or laundry folding to check out the latest Laguna Beach Parents Club news. We had a great end to the summer with an awesome Moms Night Out house party (including a photo booth, DJ and visit from the cops), our annual picnic and a filled-to-capacity parenting class.

We hate to already be using the phrase “remainder of the year,” but we have a lot of great things planned for the remainder of the year, starting with unarguably our cutest event — the annual Halloween Walk this Wednesday, October 23. This year’s walk will be just as memorable as last year’s. Mayor Kelly Boyd will lead the parade and we’ll also be joined by a special guest from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center. The walk will start at Main Beach promptly at 4:15, so please arrive early and allow time for parking. Each playgroup coordinator will be holding a sign and helping the little ones line up in the right spot. With police assistance, we’ll cross PCH, trick-or-treat at the businesses and galleries on Forest and end at the Presbyterian Church/Preschool parking lot, where the kids will be greeted with a Waste Management truck that they can play on and take pictures with. Once the walk ends, head over to the fire station for more candy and pictures with one of the fire trucks, which will be sitting out for the kids. The Water District also will have a table set up and will be handing out water wise (and other) treats. Parents, don’t be shy. Every year, many of the moms and dads dress up, so you won’t be alone in your tights, wigs and masks.

For the Halloween Walk, we are supporting the Los Angelitos Orphanage, a home for orphans and abandoned children that would otherwise be living on the streets of Tijuana. They need basic paper and pantry items, such as toilet paper, paper towels, Ziploc bags, Tupperware containers and non-perishable food items. We will have a clearly marked drop-off box at Main Beach near PCH. If you don’t have time to make it to the store, please just grab something out of your cabinets on your way out the door.

On October 31, it’s hard to find a better place to celebrate Halloween than Oak Street. The families living on this street hand out a tremendous amount of candy to the kids of Laguna. To help out, please consider dropping off a bag or two of candy (or as much as you’d like) to 517 Oak St. There will be a box in front of the gate from Thursday, October 24 to Wednesday, October 30 so that you can stop by any time. Our contributions are always greatly appreciated by the families on Oak Street.

If you want to make the most of your Halloween costumes, El Morro is hosting Friday Night Frights Boo Blast on Friday, October 25 from 2:30 to 7:30. You can purchase tickets for games, rides and food at the event and parking/shuttle service will be available at Reef Point and Crystal Cove State Park parking lots. You can find more details at ElMorroPTA.org.

Look for upcoming announcements on Thanksgiving crafts, making ornaments for our holiday Sawdust tree, a December Moms Night Out, a Dads Night Out and more. We hope to help you make the most of the rest of 2013 with your family. See you at an event soon!
